Internal Alterations and Loft Conversion

Due to the property’s listed status, the project required specialist structural engineering design that carefully balanced structural safety with heritage preservation (and special care was taken to minimise intervention to the historic fabric of the building and retain original structural elements such as chimney breasts. This meant to make an opening in the wall containing chimney breast, we had to design alternative solutions to reduce loads transferred to existing feature structure. All design was closely coordinated with the architect and conservation requirements. Steel beams were designed to fit within floor/roof zones to avid altering ceiling heights or historic features.

Our role as structural engineers in Hampstead, London, was to provide structural calculations, structural drawings, and sensitive structural design solutions that complied with both Building Regulations and Listed Building Consent requirements. (the feature requirements were to provide structural solutions which worked with the existing timber and masonry structures, avoiding unnecessary removal of original elements and to limit the load increase on these components.
