Background Information
This residential structural engineering project involved a semi-detached property located in Totteridge, North London. The property featured a shared chimney stack serving both the front and rear chimney breasts, which converged into a single chimney stack within the loft space and continued above roof level.
The client required the removal of both the front and rear chimney breasts at ground floor and first floor levels to maximise usable internal space and improve the layout of the property.
Project Details
As part of these alterations, specialist structural engineering design and structural calculations were required to safely support the remaining chimney stack above.
Our role as structural engineers in Totteridge, London, was to assess the existing structure, design a compliant support solution, and provide structural drawings and calculations in accordance with UK Building Regulations. IN this instance, we were not able to use gallow brackets.
Outcome – Safe, Compliant Chimney Breast Removal
The structural engineering solution allowed the client to safely remove both chimney breasts at ground and first floor levels while maintaining full structural support for the remaining chimney stack.
Key outcomes included:
- Safe removal of load-bearing chimney breast elements.
- Fully compliant structural steel beam support solution.
- Building Control-approved structural calculations and drawings.
- Increased usable internal space within the property.
- Long-term structural safety and stability.
Particular care was taken to minimise disruption to the original roof structure while ensuring compliance with modern structural safety standards.
